Responsibilities:


The Head of Enterprise Risk Management North America is responsible for building the company North America’s capability to manage risk on an integrated and comprehensive basis.


The ERM team is responsible for among other things the development and implementation of an enterprise-wide risk management governance framework and related policies and guidelines, key components being the Enterprise Risk Framework and Policy, Enterprise Risk Appetite, Enterprise Risk Reporting including the identification of Top Risks and Emerging Risks, Risk Control Framework, Enterprise Risk Culture and Inventory of Risk Policies.


  • Championing and overseeing an effective and independent enterprise risk management framework for the North America entities of the company that is in alignment with the company Group policies and standards and U.S. and other regional regulatory requirements.

  • Develop and implement processes to assess and/or monitor the effectiveness of risk governance frameworks / adherence to standards as appropriate.

  • Act as an internal subject matter expert and develop organization capability around risk governance and decision processes aligned with the company operating model and risk strategy.

  • Support the maintenance of risk related Charters, Policies and Procedures and ensure their ongoing relevance.

  • In close cooperation with the business developing a North America Risk Appetite Statement, which is translated to the various rural and retail, wholesale and leasing business lines.

  • Championing and enhancing consistent awareness of enterprise risk management components, including policies and standards and desired risk culture, throughout the region.

  • Overseeing and managing the regional enterprise risk management organization with management responsibilities which include, but are not limited to:

  • Building and sustaining an enterprise risk management team that has the capabilities to adapt to a rapidly evolving and more demanding regulatory environment.

  • Ensuring the allocation and retention of appropriate resources to the regional enterprise risk management activities, including staffing, training, analytics, databases, reporting tools and methodologies.

  • Identifying, measuring, monitoring and reporting on the aggregate risk profile, including emerging trends and concentrations, across the region, and enforce compliance with policies.

  • Understanding movements and drivers of risk metrics down to the business line and product level.

  • Preparation of high quality presentations and analysis for a diverse audience for senior risk staff, commercial departments, other support departments and senior management.

  • Secretary to Board Risk Committee and North America Risk Management Committee.

  • Having the regional risk management infrastructure meet regulatory requirements, including but not limited to Federal Reserve Regulation YY and to be published regulation of OCC.

  • Serving as an independent and objective central point for all risk-related issues that affect the regional entities’ enterprise risk profile. Ensuring business strategies are in line with risk appetite.

  • Escalating risk matters, that may have franchise or reputational risk and threaten to negatively impact the acceptable risk profile.

  • Collaborating and teaming with the risk management professionals in the regional team, the US business lines and Finance, and risk management professionals in head office to establish and maintain an appropriate risk management culture throughout the region.

  • Conduct research on industry leading practices for risk governance matters pertaining to the banking industry including board practices relating to risk governance.

Qualifications:


  • University-level degree in economics, statistics, business or mathematics

  • High standard of written English, and experience of producing formal documentation Post graduate qualifications i.e. CFA, FRM, PRIMA would be an added advantage

  • Seasoned risk management professional (12 + years of senior leadership role), with knowledge of risk management governance and controls within a large complex US banking organization.

  • Experience with interaction with regulators.

  • Experience with risk management frameworks include Internal Capital Model such as economic risk capital

  • Experience with credit risk management in Wholesale banking, Rural & Retail Banking and Leasing and experience with operational risk management including scenario analysis.

  • Excellent quantitative skills.

  • Ideally, experience in limit setting and in the design or implementation of Risk Appetite and wider Risk Frameworks, or previous experience in an Enterprise Risk function.

  • Knowledge of activities and products offered in the North America region Experienced in interacting with regulators, auditors, executive management and Boards.

  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills Experience with project management (IT projects and data management).

  • Knowledge of other areas such as Liquidity Risk or Capital Management would also be useful.
