Landscape Restoration Intern - World Resources Institute - Washington, DC
This internship will provide an excellent opportunity to apply research, analytical, communication, and professional skills. The intern will gain strong insights on landscape restoration of degraded lands in Latin America with special focus in Brazil by working directly with experts of national and regional offices, and will receive ongoing guidance from the reporting supervisor. This work is expected to inform public decision-makers to land use plans and strategies. This study will also provide information to private impact investors to identify potential cost and benefits of restoration practices in Brazil.
Initiative 20×20 is a country-led effort to bring 20 million hectares of degraded lands in Latin America and the Caribbean into the process of restoration by 2020. The Initiative, launched formally at COP 20 in Lima, is supporting the Bonn Challenge, a global commitment to restore 150 million hectares of land around the world by 2020, and the New York Declaration on Forests that seeks to restore 350 million hectares by 2030. Initiative 20×20 currently has 11 countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru) and three federal States in Brazil (Espirito Santo, Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso).
This regional restoration movement is part of the Global Restoration Initiative that works to combine existing principles and techniques of development, conservation, and natural resource management. Restoring lost forests and degraded lands is essential for human livelihoods and well-being, long-term food security, climate stability, and biodiversity conservation. In order to counteract land degradation and to improve livelihoods, we need to restore degraded forests and increase the productivity of existing agricultural land at the same time.
