Dragon Racing, a professional motorsports team that competes in Formula-E—the new all electric Formula racing series—is seeking an Operations and Media Relations Specialist to join its Los Angeles-based team to plan, coordinate logistics, assist team sponsors, and execute the media relations and credentialing at all its races and related events worldwide, including China, Mexico, Germany, Monaco, France, Uruguay, Argentina, Russia, New York, and the UK, among others.
This role will manage and coordinate media communications and tactics around team partners, as well as strategic communications for the team, including crafting pitches, authoring press releases, and generating PowerPoint presentations, media docs, and other communications materials as required. As the team’s Operations and Media Relations Specialist, you will be responsible for building relationships with key partners, interfacing with key executives, and media outlets as well as managing all media monitoring and distribution lists, and overseeing all social media accounts as well as the team’s website. In this role, you will also provide on-site support for races, including operational components and logistics for team travel. This role requires an always “ON” personality and temperament.
Dragon Racing is owned and led by Jay Penske, the Chairman and CEO of Penske Media Corporation (PMC) and there will likely be opportunities to engage in media sales and communications opportunities between the race team and Penske Media’s global brands.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to):
- Build relationships and assist key strategic partners and sponsors throughout each season. Deliver on key sponsorship messaging and partner objectives.
- Develop and help implement strategic media relations plans to significantly increase Dragon Racing’s brand awareness.
- Cultivate relationships with key journalists at national, local and trade outlets.
- Write, review and edit media and sales pitches, press releases, internal communication of company news and events, and other press materials as needed.
- Proactively manage calendars to identify opportunities to promote Dragon Racing and its drivers.
- Develop and execute plans for events.
- Pitch team executives and drivers for placement in media stories.
- Develop content and execute updates to Dragon Racing’s website.
- Assemble and maintain media lists and manage press release distribution.
- Responsible for pre-race, race and post-race media operations, media centers, including housing and transportation needs. Serve as liaison between sponsors, media and race operations.
- Maintain annual calendar of races and events. Assist Team travel agency in ensuring team personnel travel and logistic requirements are met.
- Plan and execute special media functions such as promotional receptions and events. Experience with high profile talent and executives, ability to remain composed under pressure.
- Respond to incoming media inquiries and vet PR opportunities including time sensitive media requests, internal and external data/fact checking requests, speaking engagements/webinars, awards, etc.
- Support communications functions for Penske Media Corporation, including media list maintenance, social media strategy and execution, written content for both external and internal messaging, updates to the corporate website and other special projects with the Company’s Director of Corporate Communications.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Bachelor’s degree: (B.A.) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related major. Master’s degree (M.A.) preferred.
- 2- 3 years media relations, public relations or communications experience including demonstrated experience pitching and creating promotional materials including press releases, bulletins, schedules for PR programs and events
- Exceptional verbal and written communications skills.
- Must have prior interaction with national media, in a Public Relations or related function.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with cross-functional teams to provide critical insight into timelines and Media Relations needs.
- Ability to handle challenges and provide quality solutions within budget.
- Self-starter who will proactively take on projects.
- Demonstrated familiarity and knowledge of online, social media and blogging community.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Experience in proactive and reactive media relationships.
- Experience owning projects.
- Ability to travel internationally.
- Racing knowledge and industry experience a plus.
