The National Wildlife Federation’s International Wildlife Conservation team in Washington, DC is growing and seeking a Program Assistant to join the team. The Program Assistant, Tropical Forests and Agriculture, will provide communications and administrative support for a project focused on eliminating the loss and degradation of tropical and sub-tropical forest ecosystems that result from agriculture production in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay by ensuring that key commodities (beef and soy) are sourced only from deforestation-free areas. The Program Assistant will directly support the Project Manager, the Communications Manager, and the rest of the team with general administrative tasks, and also help to facilitate the development and implementation of communications strategies, outreach and education plans, and systems for information sharing.
In this role you will:
- Work alongside NWF staff in fostering support for multi-stakeholder efforts aimed at developing, strengthening and expanding zero deforestation beef and soy supply chains
- Work closely with the Project Manager, Communications Manager and Senior Project Manager to help implement communications strategies, outreach and education plans as well as systems for information sharing
- Represent NWF during calls and meetings with partners
- Coordinate logistics for coalition calls and meetings
- Take detailed notes during calls and meetings, identify action items, discuss with internal team members, and disseminate notes to participants
- Track workflows in coalition working groups and identify action items for NWF
- Help develop communications and education materials with content experts, including memos, reports and factsheets
- Coordinate content updates on the International Wildlife Conservation team’s website
- Produce content for NWF blogs and social media (Facebook and Twitter)
- General administrative tasks related to implementing NWF’s international program, including assisting with project activities, maintaining files, correspondence and contact databases, phone/communications, contracts and partner agreements, travel and other logistics, expense reporting, wire transfers/ payments, and internal coordination
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, environmental issues or related field
- Experience working in a professional office environment
- Experience helping organize and/or coordinate group calls, meetings, workshops conferences and/or events
- Experience taking detailed notes during calls and meetings
- Experience helping prepare communications and/or educational documents, including factsheets and reports for general audiences and/or policy-makers
- Experience translating correspondences and documents between English and Spanish (additional experience with Brazilian Portuguese is a plus)
- Professional proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese is required (native speaker/fluency is highly desirable)
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks and coordinate different work pieces simultaneously
- Extremely well organized with attention to detail
- Self-starter, with a high degree of initiative
- Good research and report writing skills
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills
- Ability to synthesize technical information and translate for corporate, policy, or general audiences
- Ability to work with people of different cultural and professional backgrounds
- Knowledge of tropical forest conservation and the drivers of deforestation, including agricultural expansion is desirable
- Experience in target geographies (Brazilian Amazon, Cerrado and/or the Gran Chaco in Argentina and Paraguay) is desirable
- Knowledge of multi-stakeholder processes, such as roundtables related to major commodities (palm oil, soy, cattle, and/or biofuels) is desirable
- Experience with donor/grant reporting is desirable
- High level of computer proficiency and web design is desirable
